Welcome to the ESL Learning Cooperative and Digital Storytelling Project

This ePortfolio chronicles the one-year process of developing and implementing Digital Storytelling as a cooperative learning experience for ESL students at Phoenix College, in Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix College is part of the Maricopa County Community Colleges District (MCCCD).

Beginning with a Teaching and Learning Grant, ESL faculty Nancy Meyers and Claudia Tracht, along with Media Arts faculty Dale Doubleday and Cheryl Colan, tailored level 4 ESL curriculum by introducing digital storytelling in order to make a stronger link between grammar (ESL040) and listening and speaking (ESL041) courses and technology.

MCCCD's ESL and Digital Storytelling competencies were enhanced by deepening the application of skills to authentic language experiences. A framework which included syllabi, units, activities and assignments in grammar and listening and speaking were developed and coordinated around themes. In addition, by focusing on themes that all ESL students have experienced and can relate to, they were motivated to express themselves in writing and speaking about a meaningful topic. In the Spring of 2006, each of the students produced two digital stories that were theme based. For the first story, the students focused on a favorite place or a favorite object in their lives. For the second story, the students focused on the general theme of "The U.S. Journey."
